Would you overclock to improve PC's performance?
until I get my new PC I have done just that...
I have overclocked my Graphics card, well it isn't a permanent overclock one that I can apply when the games I am playing may require it...
Now I used 3DMark03 (software that measures your computers graphics capabilities) to measure the scores, but please remember that the system is an AGP based motherboard. and 3D mark03 is of course not the most recent version, everytime I try to download the latest version (over 500MB) after waiting in line for 30mins then downloading at a capped speed of 500k (may not seem so bad but 500MB still takes a while) downloading and waiting again for an additional 40 minutes? 30 if I am lucky, just to get told that the file is currupt, just really doesn't do it for me (anyone who may have a copy of this "non-currupted" please send on a CD), anyways...
First off, here is the overall specs of my machine to date:
Windows XP Home Edition w/ SP2
DirectX 9.0c (dec 06)
1GB 3200 DDR RAM
Intel Pentium 4 3.01GHz
The thing that got over-clocked
ATI Radeon X1600 Pro 512MB DDR2 AGP version
Graphics Core: 500MHz
Memory Core: 400MHz
That is its "Stock" speed, you can buy versions that say they have a high Memory Core, my graphics card actually has a 800MHz Memory Core, as it is actually 400x2 (I have been told)
The 3DMark03 score for this: 6964
I then overclocked my Graphics card to:
Graphics Core: 600MHz
Memory Core: 465MHz
and I got the 3DMark03 score of: 7873
Now you are probably wondering is it worth it for the 909 difference, well it does improve the quality of most games, of course I wouldn't reccomend any old tom dick or harry to try this, as you could damage your Graphics card, and possibly harm your PC or even yourself click here.
There are people saying they have pushed it further, I will probably try to push it really hard near the end of this PC's life, but for now, I will keep it in the safe zone...
(btw, Video above is actually a fake, it will take a LOT for a CPU to do that)
