Do you really think the PS3 is worth buying?
I mean it is again the most expensive console on the market, but does the console actually offer anything amazingly new?
I am one for pretty graphics, but I know that for about £200 you can upgrade a semi-decent computer into a graphical powerhouse. (supposing your computer has at least a AMD 64 / P4 2-3GHz CPU + compatible slot for Graphics Card)
I know Rich has done this, and he has sent me a screenie of a game running full pelt... I compared it with some of the screenies of a PS3 game, and to be honest, you wouldn't really be able to tell the difference.
Although Rich does admit that the PS3 is designed soley for games so the graphics will be a little better.
But is that all people really want in the next generation of Video games? much more prettier graphics?
What are your views, I know for a fact that I would rather buy a Wii then a PS3, the games and the price plus the HUGE backwards compatible library is making it a top buy on my list anyway.

The PS3 is all graphics, that is it... it is basically a PS2 with a much faster processor, and more Graphic muscle, guess what the PS4 will prolly just be the same but again much faster processor and better graphics...
PS2 games at the moment are getting "samey" most FPS games use the same engines pretty much, there isn't anything new there, all racing games again use similar engines, so the gameplay pretty much seems the same, the graphics are cool, but do you really need them to be better?
There is no imagination left in games anymore, all it seems to be with the PS3 is play life like games. Whats the point?
I over heard someone say that the graphics of a football game on the PS3 will be so life like it will be like you are actually there playing it! so this guy is going to spend £500 on a new console, to play a game that is life like, when he can quite easily buy a football, call up a few mates and play it down the local grounds.
All the PS3 has going for it at the moment is its Blu-Ray, which isn't really going to kick off that well, and its huge graphics...
I loved sony, but I doubt I will be buying a PS3

I am not going to state my opinion on the PS3 as it will probably just start a flame war, but it is about the same as Daves, and Dark Angels

Look you are all talking out of your ****, the PS3 is going to be the greatest console on the planet, it will have visuals that are second to none.
your saying there is no gameplay because all that it is is high visuals, isn't it supposed to draw you into the world!
Can I ask you a question.
If a Bakewell tart looks good will you eat it? If the same tart looks bad you won't why not? Humans go for quality, the games on PS3 are gunna be just that. and whats more you won't look like a fool waving your arms about to play games (I know the eye toy was out but that was a mistake)

I'm amazed so many people have passed judgment on this console already. I'm pretty sure it hasn't been released yet. The main thing you would judge any console on is it's games surely, and we don't know all the games that are coming out for the PS3 yet, and what they will all be like.
In my opinion, the original Playstation is better than all the consoles put together, that have come out after it, simply because the games on it were so unique and fun, it instantly got the gold, and the sales reflected this of course. It had the best innovation that I have ever seen on so many games, so much was ground breaking and most importantly, very fun to play.
I'll agree innovation has generally been dumped by companies like Sony and Microsoft in favour of better graphics, as unfortunately this is what so many gamers are judging games on these days. But some gems here and there are still produced for their consoles. And these of course are the ones which we would buy right?
It all comes down to how much people enjoy the particular games that a specific console provides for the consumer, and as all we are going on so far in this thread are the console's specifications and power, that's not much to judge on is it? I say wait to see what all the games are, then say you can't stand the horrible machine that is produced my Sony due to X, Y and Z. A console on it's own is nothing after all.

You say this, but everyone goes by the "Tech Demo's" that Sony and the others have released, they said themselves on E3 what the PS3 can do, and showed off what it can do, the fact is, the PS3 isn't anything truely amazing
It has High Def graphics... True, so does my desktop PC it has DVD Capability, and Blu-Ray... urm for about the same price as a PS3 I can get a Blu-Ray Re-Writer drive for my PC. (of course with the ability to play them)
the PS3 quite frankly only has its graphics to boast about, yes they have the "motion sensor" which they haven't really thought about as Duke has mentioned elsewhere I believe, "A dual Shock (without the shock) with motion detection, now you will be able to tilt your controller!"
I rather have the Wii's controller over that any day, and before people start saying IT ISN'T THE SAME! the Wii controller can detect motion in a 3D space, like jabbings, and such, plus the Wii still has Vibration, and the "Nun-chuck" both controller parts have motion sensing, only the Wiimote actually has the "Jabbing" detection
Graphics in games has already started to reach the max, there is no need for it to get any better, I was playing a PS2 game the other day, which had really good graphics, yeah they could speed up the loading times but still.. The PS3 is really in my eyes, just going to be a high powered Console that eventually people will get bored with, I know a LOT of PC gamers that would rather not bother.

Games are becoming more of the same, I want something new, the whole point of new consoles I thought where to give the gamer something completly new... lets look in the past...
NES - Master System days: really started the gaming history...
SNES and MD: yes these consoles did show off their graphics with high speed (mega drive) 2D graphics and rich colour (SNES) sprites, but this is something that isn't new, it was the first time that arcade games were playable in the home (mainly the megadrive) - we even saw the first 3D games on a home console (Virtua Racing and even Starwing)
Saturn, PSX and N64, these consoles were designed to show you what 3D graphics is all about, but wait... the N64 revolutionised something... they released a 3D controller to give better control over the games... and soon after.. Sony released their dual shock to have this technology in their games, and Saturn released theirs with NiGHTS, it changed the way we play games, and you can't deny it.
- I know a lot of PC gamers that buy controllers to emulate the "Playstations" or other types -
GCN, PS2 and XBOX: we saw pretty much the same contoll pad being used for better quality 3D games and saw the rise of pressure sensitive buttons... which didn't really do much, apart from the people that new how to use them... (most people didn't even know)
PS3, XBOX 360, Wii: PS3 is boasting high graphics and the ability to tilt basically, XBOX 360 is a waste of time and is pretty much the same as the XBOX but with better graphics, the Wii is yeah, a high powered GameCube, but the controller has been designed to give you a new way to play games...
Yes the PS3 is going to kick butt with graphics, but there is nothing new! Look what happened to the PSP, it is failing in most countries coz people prefer the DS with its line up of quality games.

Well in the UK since the launch of the DS (75 weeks in), the PSP has become the 4th best platform for software units sold, behind the PS2, PC and Xbox. PSP software sales account for 6.82% of the entire market (Xbox is 9.13%, DS 4.75%) and 41.24% of the hand-held market (DS is 28.71%). This is despite PSP software only being available for 51 of those 75 weeks.
So it is doing pretty well in the UK to be honest. People in the UK, such as myself, are very much enjoying quite a few of the PSP games.
In Japan the DS is doing phenomenally well, thus it is no surprise the PSP is not selling as many units there in comparison. But I have found nothing to indicate the PSP is in fact failing at this point in time, even though worldwide, the DS is selling more units.
Personally, I have no interest in dual shock, pressure sensitive, or tilt techonolgy, etc. The most important thing, as I have said, is the games themselves, thus I still reserve judgement on the PS3. Hopefully we will see some games that are truely fun. The console certainly has the potential to deliver them, it's all up to the games developers at this point. And I'm hoping they really go to town and make some great classics, as I'm sure everyone is hoping. Only time will tell of course.
I can tell you now, if the PS3 has games identical to the XBox360, I will have very little interest. As they have exactly what you say, perfect graphics but nothing new. And the fun factor hasn't really been considered it seems to me on games I have seen played.
Well the release date is currently the middle of September for the PS3, so let's see what gems they can cook up for then. I see a few titles that look rather promising.
edit: One's things for sure, these games are going to be expensive, so they better be good if they want me to buy them!

So going through some of the old threads, for a laugh I thought I post my new view 6 years later.
I have had an XBOX 360, which I loved, the games were fantastic, the graphics were amazing, and the controller was comfortable, and the whole experience was brilliant, the only thing that I didn't like is the forcing you to pay £40 a year for GOLD so you can access the games online features, the marketplace, and even download demo's Yes you heard right, you can only download demo's if you pay for the gold subscription.. hold on thats not all, you also have to pay for Gold account to access FREE websites like, Youtube, FaceBook and BBC iPlayer (which is included in your TV License!!!) and even a browser these days, and you have to pay for gold to access SUBSCRIPTION websites, like NetFlix, LoveFilm and SkyGo.
So a monthly cost for Netflix on the XBOX 360 is £10.98 (Netflix = £5.99 + XBOX Live Gold= £4.99) However on the equally brilliant PS3 £5.99 (Netflix = £5.99 + PSN = £0.00)
I bet that all the XBOX fanboys will say "Yeah but at least we didn't get hacked" well, thats not entirely true, XBOX gets hacked on a daily bases, as people want the XBOX 360, but don't want to pay for live, so they find ways to force money off other people to pay for it using scams, which is just as bad if you ask me.
The hack on PSN didn't effect me, and I got free stuff because of it.
The PS3 is a fantastic console, it may have its tiny flaws, but the pro's outweigh these, and the moral of this story is, that I had a choice to buy a 360 or a PS3 I chose 360, and followed like a sheep and done what everyone else done, then after a couple of years, I managed to get a PS3 slim from "Dave" as he won it on a compo for only £130 at the time, and after a few months I sold my xbox, why... Mainly because the PS3 is the same thing deep down, only the £40 a year is a CHOICE not a forced option, and what I get for that option is so much more worth it.
Oh and for the record, XBOX Live Gold does NOT pay for dedicated game servers, they use the same servers that PSN uses.
